Getting Started
Students must be enrolled as an Animal and Veterinary Sciences major or minor to receive credit for an internship from this department.
The student must also have an approved worksheet and learning contract (steps 1 and 2 below) to get an override.
The override must be granted before the add/drop deadline. This process can take a few days so it is critical that the intern plan ahead.
Students who choose to pursue an internship for academic credit in the ASCI program must follow the steps.
It is best to start the internship search and application process at least semester in advance.
If there are questions about how to complete an ASCI internship for credit contact us at ASCI.Internship@uvm.edu
ASCI Internship Guidelines
- This variable credit course allows students to register from 1-3 credits per semester. (up to 15credits* if doing a semester away)
- A maximum of 15 credits (of internship credit) can be taken during a student's time at ¶¶Òõ̽̽.
- According to ASCI policy, you are entitled to 1 credit for every 45 hours of participation at the internship site.
- You will be billed for all credits exceeding 19 on your schedule for the fall and spring semester. Request form for more than 19 credits
- Students doing internships for credit during the summer must register for ASCI 2991 or during the summer term. Summer tuition rates apply. See ¶¶Òõ̽̽ tuition rates.
- Students cannot earn retroactive credit for internships completed in previous semesters.
Step 1: Fill out an internship worksheet
This is an initial point of contact and lets the department know the student is interested in an internship. It starts the conversation about the Who, What, Where, When and Why. An internship can be local to ¶¶Òõ̽̽ or if the student completes it over a holiday or summer break it can be done anywhere.
Once the student has filled out the worksheet they will get an email from the ASCI Internship Coordinator with questions, clarifications and next steps. Typically a one-on-one meeting is helpful to make sure all are on the same page before the Leaning Contract (Step 2) is filled out.
Please note when calculating hours worked and how many weeks the intern has worked that students can not log hours during Finals Week. ASCI requires 45 hours to equal one credit hour, and we don't give half credits. The intern should contact the Internship Coordinator if there are any questions on how the process works.
If an internship site has never had a ¶¶Òõ̽̽ student before we will need the internship site to contact us to fill out some paperwork prior to the student beginning the internship.
Step 2: Submit a Learning Contract
After the Internship worksheet has been submitted and the student will get email approval from the ASCI Internship Coordinator to move forward.
Step two is for the student to submit a Learning Contract.
A Learning Contract is required for all internships receiving credit. It is an agreement between the ASCI Internship Coordinator, the Intern, and the Internship Supervisor outlining what each is responsible for. It also gives the deadlines for when paperwork is due so that the student can receive credit.
A Learning Contract must be in place for the ASCI Internship Coordinator to grant an override for enrollment (Step 3). This must be done by the Add/Drop deadline (typically about two weeks into the semester).
Step 3: Request an Override
After the Learning Contract has been submitted and approved the student may request an override. If you don't hear back within two days please email the Internship Coordinator at ASCI.Internship@uvm.edu to follow up.
Once registered, the intern should submit weekly journal entries and assignments to the Internship Coordinator.
This must be done by the Add/Drop deadline.
This info is for all students enrolled in ASCI 1991 or 2991 or SINT 2991A.
ASCI 3991 - Students should ask about additional work required to obtain credit.
Step 4: Submit Weekly Hours and Journal Entries
While doing the internship, students are required to submit a journal entry each week by the end of the day on Friday 11:59pm.
If a student fails to submit a journal entry, their hours for that week will not be counted toward their overall hours.
Note that a week is from Saturday-Friday at 11:59PM.
Step 5: Mid-semester check-In
Halfway through the internship, the ASCI Internship Coordinator will be looking for feedback from both the student and the Internship Site Supervisor to make sure each is meeting the goals and objectives of the internship.
The student is responsible for communicating the deadline to the supervisor. Fall semester this feedback is due the seventh week of the semester (typically early October). Spring semester it is due the eighth week (the week before Spring Break).
*The student and the supervisor use the same form.
Step 6: Student Evaluation of Internship and Presentation and Photos
This is completed in the final week of the internship by the student.
Poster/Photos
A PowerPoint presentation and photos will be due at this time. It will be submitted through the .
For posters and presentations:
- Submit electronically, a PowerPoint file (not a pdf or jpg)
- 11x17 size, vertical orientation
- The name and a describe of the business/organization/internship site
- Contact information of the organization
- List or write a brief summary of the internship responsibilities
- Types of experiences the internship provided the intern
- 3-4 photos and the intern must be featured in at least two of the photos
- The intern's favorite part of the experience
- The intern's name and email
In the same PowerPoint file, but separate from the poster:
- Photos: 5-6 Photos with captions. These should be different photos, totally separate from the poster.
- The intern should be in at least 50% of the photos.
- Please insert them below your poster slide so they are all in the same document
Step 7: Supervisor Evaluation of Intern
This is completed in the final week of the internship by the supervisor. The information is confidential and is only for the Internship Coordinators.
The student is responsible for communicating the link and the deadline to the supervisor for this.
