Program Overview

Focused on equine health and disease, industry, and management, undergraduate students gain a foundation in working with and caring for horses across disciplines, breeds, and location.

Curriculum

The Department and College oversee the ¶¶Òõ̽̽ Paul R. Miller Research and Educational Center on Spear Street in South Burlington, which includes the Ellen A. Hardacre Equine Center. With six teaching horses housed at the horse barn during the academic year, equine-interested students gain hands-on experience handling and caring for these horses in an educational environment.

The Equine Studies Minor requires at least 15 credits as described below: 6 credits of required courses (see table below)

6 credits of elective courses from the list of equine focused courses (see table below) 3 credits at any level (ASCI 1000 – 4000) of equine focused courses

The nine credits in equine focused courses allow flexibility in choosing courses that meet student interests, for example equine health and disease and/or equine industry and management. If a student is majoring in Animal Science, they cannot count more than 2 courses towards both major and minor requirements.

Admissions

There are no majors excluded from declaring an Equine Studies Minor. Students majoring in Animal and Veterinary Sciences cannot take more than two required/eligible overlapping courses; for example, students cannot count ASCI 117 and ASCI 121 for both the major and minor requirements. Students will work with major and minor advisors to prevent overlapping more than two courses.

There are no eligibility restrictions for declaring an Equine Studies Minor.

Outcomes

The department and college are committed to experiential learning, recognizing the benefits to our students’ long-term learning and growth. In lecture halls on campus, students discuss current issues in the equine world, work through real-life cases in small groups, and interact with equine professionals from across the region. Again, the department and college encourage multi-faceted, inclusive teaching that exposes our students to the breadth of the equine field.
