Academic Preparation

Since the practice of medicine is both art and science, medical schools are eager for students who have studied a range of subjects.

Major Choice

Body

Your major should be driven by your academic interests.

There is not a “pre-med studies” track or a “pre-med major” at ̽̽. Medical schools are looking for candidates who are passionate about learning; who fully engage in an academic discipline of genuine interest. Find a major that excites you, whether in the sciences, humanities, or social sciences, and

  • Build strong science competencies in the classroom and laboratory
  • Explore non-science courses that expand your understanding of our complex world and about people, particularly those with lived experiences different from your own
  • Consider getting research experience in a field of interest

Select coursework that will enhance your ability to think critically and understand the human dimensions of caring for patients.  Your major should allow you to develop knowledge and skills that will provide a solid foundation for other potential careers of interest, too. (The majority of students considering medicine at the start of college end up pursuing other paths, both in & out of healthcare).

Lastly, take care to plan out a curriculum that allows you to complete courses necessary for your major requirements as well as recommended medical school pre-requisites and MCAT preparation.
