Dr. Julia M. “Julie” Smith, a veterinarian and animal scientist, conducts outreach and transdisciplinary research focused on mitigating the consequences of diseases of livestock, emphasizing the importance of awareness and prevention. She received her B.S., D.V.M., and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University. Dr. Julie has applied her veterinary background to programs in the areas of herd health, calf and heifer management, and agricultural emergency management.
She is currently a research professor in the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences and has conducted outreach and research related to livestock biosecurity for over two decades. The long-term goal of these efforts is to help people engage in ways of thinking and acting that prevent or minimize disease or disaster. Her collaborations with the Social Ecological Gaming and Simulation Laboratory have led to multiple grants and publications. She also oversees two public-facing websites related to livestock biosecurity: and .
Originally from the NYC suburbs, she headed off to the ag school at Cornell and never looked back. She is married to a Vermont (former) dairyman and has a son who loves to run.
