BIO

Dr. Görres is a physicist whose career has taken him via material science and natural resources to soil ecology. His interest lies in connecting the physics of habitable pore spaces to the action of soil organisms. Of late, he has been organizing an international scientific response to the invasion of jumping worms in northern North American forest by bringing together colleagues from Nova Scotia to Minnesota for joint projects on jumping worm ecology. He believes that only concerted actions of researchers and stakeholders will generate solutions. His research interest is in the spatial distribution, spread and phenology of jumping worms. His lab is engaged in studying biological and cultural methods of controlling these earthworms. He also studies the impact of invasive earthworms on natural resources with a particular focus on soil erodibility. Other research interests are in sustainable agriculture and the restoration of forested riparian buffers.
Dr. Görres is an enthusiastic teacher who enjoys interacting with his students sharing his passion for soil science and the natural world. He teaches Fundamentals of Soil Science, and Soil Fertility and Management to agriculture and environmental science students. It is important to him to provide students an international view of soils and other natural resources, and equip them with an understanding of the universality of the laws of Nature.
Dr. Görres acknowledges that his research and teaching occurs on unceded Abenaki territory but also on a troubled Earth. Solutions are appreciated.

Courses

PSS 2610; PSS 2620; PSS 2810

Publications

Awards and Achievements

2008 voted best professor by the students in the Bachelor of General Studies program at the URI Urban Campus in Providence, RI. The recognition was for an introductory science seminar that demonstrated science process with engaging hands-on science with readings and exploration of great, but undervalued scientists.

Area(s) of expertise

Soil Physics; Soil Ecology; Invasive Earthworms.
