FM Listening Device
An FM or Assistive Listening Device (ALD) amplifies the speaker’s voice and sends the signal directly to a student’s ear, hearing aid or cochlear implant. The speaker is often given a microphone to wear during class. The student will bring the necessary equipment with them and may ask to sit in in a specific location.
- If you already use a microphone in class and the student gives you their FM microphone (usually with a clip or lanyard), please use both microphones, as the class microphone is not sufficient for the person with hearing loss.
Ìý - If you have a large lecture class, please repeat the questions from the audience so the student using the FM will be able to hear them.Ìý This will also benefit others in the class.
Ìý - If your class does group work, the student may want to place the microphone on their desk or pass it around during the discussion.
