FM Listening Device

An FM or Assistive Listening Device (ALD) amplifies the speaker’s voice and sends the signal directly to a student’s ear, hearing aid or cochlear implant. The speaker is often given a microphone to wear during class. The student will bring the necessary equipment with them and may ask to sit in in a specific location.

  • If you already use a microphone in class and the student gives you their FM microphone (usually with a clip or lanyard), please use both microphones, as the class microphone is not sufficient for the person with hearing loss.

  • If you have a large lecture class, please repeat the questions from the audience so the student using the FM will be able to hear them.Ìý This will also benefit others in the class.

  • If your class does group work, the student may want to place the microphone on their desk or pass it around during the discussion.
