Each year, there are milestone student events at Larner, including Orientation, White Coat Ceremony, Match Day, Reunion, and more. While major events are managed by the Office of Medical Communications, there are many student events that our community wants to know about.

Becoming a doctor takes a lot of hard work and commitment. But there are many special events and rites of passage along the way.

Match Day

Body

For medical students nationwide, Match Day is the culmination of four years of hard work, and many consider it the most exciting day of the medical school experience.

Students receive notice of their residency matches beginning at 12:00 Noon (EDT) on the third Friday of March each year, and at ¶¶Òõ̽̽ that event is shared by the entire Larner College of Medicine community. One-by-one students are invited to announce their match. Many students choose to announce their Match news to classmates, faculty, and staff while others opt to learn of their Match in private.

Orientation

We want to congratulate you on your admission to the Larner College of Medicine and wish you a happy and successful four years.

We strive to provide a quality orientation program that helps you become familiar with our campus and our community. The Office of Medical Education (OME) coordinates a week-long Orientation course. Orientation is an essential part of your transition to medical school and is a credit-bearing course; therefore, participation during the entire orientation is required.

White Coat Ceremony

What is a White Coat Ceremony?

Initiated on August 20, 1993 at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, this annual ceremony or a similar rite now takes place for first-year medical students at about 90 percent of schools of medicine and osteopathy in the United States, and is supported by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation

According to the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, the White Coat Ceremony helps establish a psychological contract for the practice of medicine.

Physicians dressed in black until the late 19th century, due to the association of black attire as formal. Physicians adopted the white coat as a symbol of purity at the beginning of the 20th century.
