Lane Series audiences will remember pianist Michelle Cann, whose brilliant interpretations of Florence Price thrilled us in fall of 2021. Since then, her career has taken off with honors including the Sphinx Medal of Excellence in 2022 and the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music Award. Cann made her orchestral debut at age fourteen and has since performed with such major ensembles as The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. She regularly appears in solo and chamber recitals throughout the U.S., China, and South Korea. Notable venues include the National Centre for the Performing Arts (Beijing), the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington, D.C.), Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), and the Barbican (London). She has also appeared as a cohost and collaborative pianist with NPR’s From the Top.
Michelle Cann appears by arrangement with the Curtis Institute of Music.
The deeply engaging Cuban-American cellist Tommy Mesa has established himself as one of the most charismatic performers of his generation. The recipient of the Sphinx Organization’s 2023 Medal of Excellence, Mesa has appeared as soloist at the Supreme Court on four occasions and with major orchestras including the L.A. Phil at the Hollywood Bowl, The Cleveland Orchestra, and The Philadelphia Orchestra, to name a few. As a recitalist, Mesa has toured extensively with Michelle Cann, Olga Kern, and Ilya Yakushev (who will perform for us on April 4th). As an ensemble musician, Tommy has toured with with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and is the principal cellist of Sphinx Virtuosi. He is also the cellist of the St. Petersburg Piano Quartet, collaborates with Jupiter Chamber Players, and has toured with Itzhak Perlman both nationally and internationally.
