AX Program: The Vermont Entomology Participatory Action Research Team

The Vermont Entomology Participatory Action Research Team (VEPART) is a transdisciplinary research group focused on using Participatory Action Research (PAR) methods to integrate grower input throughout all phases of the research process. VEPART collaborates with a variety of growers across different crop systems to test and co-develop innovative strategies for northeastern agricultural producers. We conduct field trials in partnership with vegetable and berry growers in Vermont to refine and enhance their  farming practices. Additionally, we work closely with local grower and food/farm advocacy organizations to support the implementation of agroecological practices. For example, VEPART collaborates with the Vermont Vegetable and Berry Grower’s Association to manage a pest monitoring program on local farms, providing Vermont growers with weekly, region-specific information on the population dynamics of key pests throughout the growing season. This pest monitoring program is a cornerstone of our efforts, as it establishes a regular connection with the grower community.

For the upcoming fellowship season, AX fellows on our team will:

  • Travel weekly to our scout farms to monitor and collect pest data
  • Develop and distribute weekly pest reports to the Vermont grower community
  • Participate in weekly lab meetings
  • Support in the maintenance of on-farm field trials (e.g. planting, weeding, watering, etc.)
  • Collect and analyze data for on-farm field trials
  • Attend and participate in grower outreach events

It is important to note that much of our field work requires some physical stamina and may be conducted in a variety of weather conditions.
