CAT ECare

What is CAT ECare?

CAT ECare

Body

Catamount Emergency Care or CAT ECare is a growing health and safety project at ¶¶Òõ̽̽. The CAT ECare program consists of lifesaving equipment at stations distributed around campus.

CAT ECare emergency stations include Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), bleeding control kits, and Narcan®. These life-saving tools and associated training add another level of preparedness to the systems already in place and are part of ¶¶Òõ̽̽ Department of Emergency Management's continuing mission to create the safest environment possible for all those who utilize our university facilities and services.

The second part of the CAT ECare program is ongoing classes for ¶¶Òõ̽̽ students, faculty, and staff. Training includes American Heart Association CPR and AED certification, Stop the Bleed® certification, and instruction on how to use Narcan® to reverse opioid overdoses. For training information visit CAT ECare Training.

Student Engagement

Body

Student Engagement is an important part of Cat ECare.  The program has been developed and is maintained with the participation of undergraduate interns from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and ¶¶Òõ̽̽ Rescue, a Recognized Student Organization.  Students are trained and deployed as instructors and interns continue to contribute to program administration and improvement.

CPR and AED Info

Why CPR and AEDs?
Body

Sudden cardiac arrest is among the leading causes of death in the United States.  Currently, the only way to restore a regular heart rhythm during cardiac arrest is to use an AED.  (American Red Cross, 2023.)  Bystander CPR and use of AEDs are a vital part of the chain of survival for patients experiencing cardiac arrest.

How Do I Get An AED/CAT ECare Station?
Body

The Department of Emergency Management has limited funding for AED purchases.  We are able to supply the bleeding control kits and Narcan® and all of the required lifetime inspections and maintenance, and pad and battery replacements.  If a department purchases an AED and cabinet (approximately $2,000) we will pay the costs for installation and the items above.  For more information and current pricing please contact ¶¶Òõ̽̽ Technical Services Partnership at ITS-AED@uvm.edu
