Award recipients receive up to $1,500 per year per award. More than one award may be made each year. The Fellowship may fund expenses related to conducting research, including (but not limited to): 

• research supplies and equipment
• software
• transcription and translation services
• printing and mailing costs
• travel to collect data
• compensation or expense reimbursement to research participants
• other expenses necessary to conduct the proposed research.

The fellowship does not include personnel time to collect data, purchase of computers, or costs for travel to present research findings after completion (at conferences, etc.).

To qualify, the applicant must:

1. Be a “Vermont educator" engaged in work related to children and youth with disabilities in Vermont. 

This can include but is not limited to:

• educational researchers
• special education teachers
• general education teachers
• school administrators
• speech-language pathologists
• school psychologists
• counselors
• occupational therapists
• physical therapists
• social workers
• rehabilitation counselors
• recreation therapists
• school nurses
• librarians, and
• parents who have children with disabilities.

2. Identify a faculty advisor who will help to guide the research from start to finish.

If you are interested in applying but do not have a connection to a ¶¶Òõ̽̽ faculty member, email the chair of the Committee at Jesse.Suter@uvm.edu. Applicants are not required to be ¶¶Òõ̽̽ students.

3. Propose a research study.

Your research study must contribute to the education of Vermont's children and youth with disabilities. We fund a wide range of methodologies and topics.

Timelines

• December 1: The deadline for submitting applications.
• December 19: The Committee determines which projects will be supported.
• December 21: All applicants receive notification of the Committee’s decision.
• January 10: Funds will be made available to funded applicants.

Application Components

Important: You should write the application in a way that people who are not experts in your field can understand it.

1. Write a two or three page summary of the study.

This should include:

• Name, mailing address, email, phone, degrees (in progress or earned);
• Faculty advisor name, department, email, phone;
• Title of study;
• Abstract of Study (including purpose, research question(s), and research design);
• Proposed dates for initiation and completion of the study;
• Plans for disseminating the results of the study;
• A brief statement explaining how the research advances Jean Garvin's legacy by contributing to the education of Vermont's students with disabilities.

2. Include a budget (up to $1,500).

You should include descriptions and amounts of each proposed item. If the proposal is attached to a research project that has funding, explain why more funding is needed.

3. Include a letter of support from a faculty advisor.

Each letter should include your faculty advisor's willingness to supervise the research from to start to finish, and an assurance that all required IRB procedures will be followed for the protection of human subjects.

4. Email your application by the December 1 deadline.

Submit applications to the the Review Committee Chairperson Jesse Suter at Jesse.Suter@uvm.edu. All components should be submitted by email as a single PDF file. Please write "Jean Garvin Research" in the email subject line. 

 

1. Email a summary of your research to Jesse Suter by May 15th.

2. Include a photo of yourself or your research for potential use on the website or promotional materials.

3. Present your funded research at ¶¶Òõ̽̽’s CESS Research Conference in May, where you will be recognized for your award.

4. Acknowledge partial support from the Jean S. Garvin Research Fellowship on presentations and publications.

5. Send citations to published or presented work to the Committee Chair so we can post them on our website. This should be done as soon as possible so we can highlight your work.
