This past weekend, the Grossman Student Advisory Committee hosted the first annual Dean’s Cup Case Competition held at the Grossman School of Business.
Teams of 3-4 students were presented with the case one week before Saturday’s presentation, and subsequently worked throughout the week to refine their recommendations and analyses. The judging panel comprised of: the Director of Undergraduate Programs and Senior Lecturer, Amy Tomas, Lecturer Paula Cope, Associate Professor Michael Tomas III, and Lecturer Eric Hanson.
The Dean’s Cup is the Grossman Schools first internal case competition where teams comprised of, and competed against, other University of Vermont business students. During the final award ceremony, Dean Sanjay Sharma spoke of the value of an internal competition, saying it gave students a chance to refine presentation skills and learn more about how a case competition works. This helps students prepare for larger case competitions against other schools around the world.
When asked about their experience in preparing for the day, one team said, “It was cool to have this motivation to get together outside of your traditional academic environment and collaborate toward a common goal of today’s presentation.” Another team commented on the presentation itself, saying “It was so fun to share our hard work with the judges and to have to think on our feet when the judges asked us questions about our recommendation. This helps us take what we’ve learned in the classroom and apply it to a real-time business situation.”
The Dean’s Cup will be hosted by the Grossman Student Advisory Committee and the Grossman School of Business each year.
