Ali Hartman, head of responsible investing and impact at Tiger Global, joined our Sustainable Innovation MBA (SI-MBA) students as part of the program's Innovator in Residence speaker series. She shared some of the seminal stories from childhood and throughout her life that influenced her career journey—a path that has taken her from sidewalk soup kitchens and protests on the streets, to farm fields, graduate school in Paris, and corporate board rooms, with many other stops along the way.
Ali is an expert in responsible investment; environmental, social, and governance (or ESG) integration; venture philanthropy; venture impact; and gender lens investing. She spent most of her professional career in roles that sit at the intersection of profit and purpose. Ali shared key insights gained throughout her career—which includes venerable organizations such as the International Labor Organization (ILO), Coca Cola, KKR, and now Tiger Global—about how to be an effective changemaker in different types of organizations. These insights include the importance of managing and working within matrixed organizations and to seek out opportunities to influence change by understanding the incentives that drive different business units and functions.
In her current role at Tiger Global, Ali strives to use a range of traditional and innovative tools to create a more sustainable, inclusive, just world for all. During her session, she engaged our students in understanding the distinctions between the different financial tools that can be used to make impact such as Impact Investing, ESG, philanthropy, and more. In this session, the students got an insider's view to what it’s like to drive impact through a global investment firm.
