The fundamental purpose of academic advising is to guide the individual student through the process of clarifying and meeting his or her educational and career goals. Academic advising requires that the student and faculty member work together as a team; the student should come prepared with specific questions and ideas based upon degree requirements and career aspirations. Student responsibilities for undergraduate academic advising are listed on The Center for Academic Success page.

Your academic advisor has expertise in academic issues, especially pertaining to majors in Studio Art, Art History, and Art Education. Other matters about which you may seek advice and support include student health, legal matters, writing and learning skills, general career planning, lifestyle/residential issues, and academic accommodations. ¶¶Òõ̽̽ offers free professional advising regarding these and other issues. Students with majors in Studio Art and Art History should contact College of Arts & Sciences Student Services for help locating resources. Students pursuing the B.S. in Art Education should contact College of Education and Social Services Student Services.

Advising Process

When you declare a major in Studio Art, Art History, or Art Education, you will be assigned to an individual faculty advisor who will provide assistance on the following topics:
  • Course selection
  • Fulfilling requirements of the major
  • General distribution and minor requirements within the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Planning for off-campus studies, internships, and other opportunities
  • Navigating the Four-Year Plan
  • Career ideas and opportunities

All advisors hold regular office hours. Check the faculty office hours list to see when your advisor is available and to find contact information to arrange an appointment.

Minors in Art History or Art or students considering a major/minor who would like advice should contact artandarthistory@uvm.edu.

Advisor Changes: Leaves and Sabbaticals

If your advisor goes on sabbatical or other leave, you will be assigned temporarily to another faculty member until your advisor returns and resumes duties; if you are being reassigned, the Department's administrative assistant will email you to let you know who your acting advisor will be.

Student-Initiated Change of Advisor

If you would like to change your advisor, contact artandarthistory@uvm.edu.

Careers, Research, and Graduate School

The Department is committed to helping students learn more about their chosen field of study and the opportunities associated with it. In addition to directing you to consult individual faculty members about these issues, we strongly encourage you to attend regular events devoted to the following topics:
