Legal Name

The official name of the institution is University of Vermont and State Agricultural College. The Latin name, Universitas Viridis Montis, is the source of the popular abbreviation “̽̽.”

Legal Status

Pursuant to Charter amendments adopted by the state legislature in 1955, ̽̽ and State Agricultural College is a body corporate that shall be "recognized and utilized as an instrumentality of the state for providing public higher education.”
