The course is approximately 104 hours of classroom time (divided between lecture and skills labs) and a clinical observation experience of approximately 20-40 hours.
Students will develop competence in the following areas: advanced assessment, use of an advanced airway, intravenous therapy, and the management of (including pharmacological interventions) for patients suffering from non-traumatic chest pain, difficulty breathing consistent with bronchoconstriction, severe allergic reactions, and patients suffering altered mental states including diabetic and narcotic overdose emergencies.
Prerequisites
To be eligible for the course, candidates must meet the following entry requirements:
- Certified as a Vermont or National EMT
- Affiliation with a Vermont-licensed Advanced Life Support (ALS) service
- Pass a written entrance exam

Academic Credit Option

- Am I eligible for the REMS AEMT course? To be eligible you must hold a current Vermont or National EMT certification and be affiliated with a Vermont-licensed Advanced Life Support (ALS) service organization.
- What is the entrance exam? The entrance exam is 150 multiple choice questions based on the DOT Emergency Medical Technician Basic (1994) curriculum. The exam may only be taken once per course application. To take the entrance exam contact Patrick.Malone@med.uvm.edu. All applicants must pass the exam with a score of 80% or better.
- How long is the course? The course is 104 hours equally divided between lectures and skills labs. In addition, students are required to complete clinical objectives. The clinical observation time varies, however, the average student will spend between 20 and 40 hours in addition to classroom and personal study time. Note that the clinical requirement is time intensive during the later part of the course and students should carefully assess their personal and work needs during the time of the course.
