BURLINGTON, Vt., December 18, 2024 — Students at ̽̽’s College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) will soon benefit from a new scholarship program established by . As part of GF’s ongoing commitment to developing workforce talent in semiconductor design and manufacturing in the region, the GlobalFoundries Scholarship will support students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs in physics, or electrical, mechanical, biomedical, or environmental engineering.
In the program’s initial year, GF will support three undergraduate students with scholarships of $10,000 each, and the scholarships are combined with a paid summer internship opportunity at GF. The scholarship will support up to six new and returning scholars in successive years. The program is designed to incentivize students to join the semiconductor industry.
In addition to the valuable hands-on experience of the internship, scholars will also be matched with a GF mentor for the duration of the scholarship period and will have the opportunity to serve as student ambassadors, speaking about their experiences in the program at campus events with GF representatives.
“This new scholarship program will have a lasting impact on ̽̽ students, offering them a distinct blend of financial support, real-world experience, and professional development,” said Jay Caporale, Assistant Vice President of Corporate and Foundation Relations at the ̽̽ Foundation. “This initiative ensures that scholars are well equipped to succeed in their careers and contribute meaningfully to innovation in their chosen fields.”
“GF recognizes the vital role of collaborating with our local education institutions to cultivate a diverse and skilled semiconductor workforce. Our continued partnership with ̽̽ underscores our unwavering commitment to nurturing the next generation of innovators and leaders in the industry,” said Ken McAvey, Vice President and General Manager at GF Vermont. “We are thrilled for this new scholarship program and look forward to working closely with ̽̽ to create additional opportunities that will drive technological advancements and strengthen the semiconductor industry.”
Through a successful strategic partnership, GF and ̽̽ have co-developed multiple other initiatives over the years to build the semiconductor workforce in the region, including paid student internships, capstone design project (SEED) sponsorship and mentorship, new undergraduate and graduate Certification in Semiconductor Engineering and Physics programs, curriculum advisement, career panelists, guest lecturers, and the participation of GF employees in ̽̽ courses via a reduced tuition agreement.
̽̽’s groundbreaking Device Characterization Teaching Lab, Vermont’s first semiconductor lab, was launched in October 2023. The new lab, featuring a suite of scientific testing and analysis equipment donated by GF, heralded an essential phase of the ongoing initiative to prepare students to work in the rapidly expanding field. A day-long celebratory event, GlobalFoundries Day, featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the lab and unique career-building activities for students with GF employees.
Days after the Device Characterization Teaching Lab’s opening, a consortium led by ̽̽ and including GF and the State of Vermont was designated as one of 31 Tech Hubs by the U.S. Department of Commerce, unlocking the opportunity for up to $75M in federal grant funding to further research in semiconductor technology.
These joint initiatives are intended to attract top undergraduate and graduate students into the semiconductor industry and retain more highly skilled graduates in the Vermont workforce. Students from ̽̽’s engineering department, its Sustainable Innovation MBA program, and its environmental sciences program have worked at GF in areas such as chip manufacturing, HR, and advancing clean energy initiatives.
