What is MATHCOUNTS?

MathCounts is NSPE's national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging “bee” style contests. Since its inception in 1983, Vermont's MathCounts program focuses on middle school students in their formative years to encourage them to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM). All students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades are eligible to participate in MathCounts. MathCounts provides three programs to schools -- Competition Series, Math Clubs, and a Video Challenge contest. Through these programs, Vermont MathCounts reaches approximately 500 middle school students throughout the state.

Who participates in MATHCOUNTS?
Body

MathCounts exists in all 50 states and 6 U.S. territories, and approximately 50 Vermont middle schools have participated in recent years. Both teams of students and individual students can enter the competition. In Vermont, there are four regional competitions each February followed by a state competition each March. The top four individual students at the state competition form Vermont's national team.

Why should my school and I participate?
Body

Best reason -- It's the most fun with math that 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students can have! Additional benefits include students' greatly increased proficiency in math, increased interest in pursuing mathematical or technical careers, and increased SAT scores. Many schools have incorporated MathCounts materials into their math curricula.

How do I participate in MATHCOUNTS?

Registration materials are mailed to all Vermont middle schools in the fall. Additionally each year the MathCounts School Handbook, which is designed to prepare students for the excitement and challenge of the MathCounts competition, is distributed free to approximately 50,000 schools nationwide. Two MathCounts programs are available to middle schools – the MathCounts Competition Program, for which there is a team entry fee, and the MathCounts Club Program, which is free to all participants. A wealth of additional resources is available online for participating teachers, including free competition sets. For more detailed information, check out the .
