REU Programs and Paid Internships

These are established programs that provide paid opportunities to conduct biologically-related research, and typically involve an individual research project.  They are listed in chronological order by posting date.  You can also browse the  by topic and location.

¶¶Òõ̽̽ students can earn credits for qualifying internship experiences, whether during the academic year or in Summer.  These are organized through a student's college or department: College of Arts & Sciences (CAS), College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS), Rubenstein School for the Environment & Natural Resources (RSENR).  CAS’s can provide students with up to $3,000 to help cover their food, rent, transportation, and/or other living expenses while doing an internship.

(SURF-N) provides summer stipends to undergraduate students interested in cutting-edge research in several disciplines of neuroscience.

There is also a RISE UP (Research Innovation in NeuroScience Education for Underserved Populations) program designed to expose students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds to research opportunities in top-notch neuroscience laboratories at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

aims to engage students in scientific explorations in the Laboratory’s research focus area, Comparative Regenerative Biology and Aging, while providing them with opportunities to build skills important to successful careers in the biological sciences. Research opportunities focus on uncovering basic cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying regenerative and aging processes in various animal model systems, including zebrafish, African turquoise killifish, nematodes and axolotls.

Approximately 20 students come to CSHL each summer for the program, living and working in the exciting Laboratory environment.

10/17 - NIH Summer Internship Programs (SIP) - various

This program is for college, graduate and professional students interested in exploring careers in research and healthcare. These are full-time research positions within one of the NIH Institutes and Centers (IC) in the NIH Intramural Research Program. Research groups are located on all NIH campuses, including the main campus in Bethesda, MD.

Summer interns work in a research groups directed by a Principal Investigator (PI). We offer research opportunities in the biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences with opportunities to explore basic, translational, and clinical research. Students interested in biology, engineering, epidemiology, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, nursing, physics, computer science, bioinformatics, and other health-related fields are invited to apply. Summer interns may not work in administrative offices or outside of the NIH IRP.

The will open in mid-November 2024, and close in late February 2025.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is an intensive, entering the summer before their final year, semester, or quarter of study. It's designed to provide research experience and mentorship for students interested in biomedical research. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, interns will complete an independent research project and present their findings at a competitive poster session.

10/11 - International Research Experience in Marine Biology - Costa Rica

The NSF IRES Costa Rica program, Monitoring marine megafauna and coral reef communities using remote technologies, seeks to provide research experience to students in tropical marine ecology and autonomous technologies.

This IRES program takes place in Santa Elena Bay, located in northwestern Costa Rica. This unique oceanographic region is characterized by the seasonal Papagayo Upwellings, which drive high productivity and biodiversity in the area.

Program participation takes place every July. Starting in 2024, NSF IRES Costa Rica is funded for three years. Applications for the July 2025 cohort will close on December 15, 2024.

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental . Our program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks and community green spaces across the country. After working with the SCA, program participants emerge with increased environmental awareness, social responsibility and leadership skills.
