Maki Hatanaka joined the ¶¶Òõ̽̽ sociology department in 2024. She specializes in teaching about food and society, social change and development, and sustainability. Her research centers on economic globalization and the initiatives aimed at regulating it, particularly within food, agriculture, and environmental contexts. Specifically, she examines forms of non-state sustainability governance and the possibilities they hold for furthering sustainability. Her research explores relations between science and politics, questions of democracy and epistemology, and the inclusion of non-experts and experiential knowledge in food governance.
Dr. Hatanaka has engaged in numerous research projects spanning geographical areas such as Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, and various regions in the U.S. Her research has covered a wide range of topics, including organic certification, sustainability metrics in commodity and specialty crop agriculture, fishery and aquaculture governance, consumer cooperative movements, and the impacts of Big Data and AI on agriculture.
In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and camping.
