Liz Metcalfe is a distinguished performer who has been hailed as “one of the state’s top pianist-harpsichordists” and “the region’s harpsichord doyenne.”
Her late husband was William Metcalfe (1935-2021), professor of music, conductor, and former chair of the Music Department. Together, Liz and Bill championed the performance of early music at ̽̽ and beyond.
The Metcalfes founded the ̽̽ Baroque Ensemble in 1965, and the group performed all over Vermont as well as Washington, D.C., Boston, and Philadelphia. Liz played harpsichord and Bill played recorder. The other musicians from ̽̽ music faculty were Jane Ambrose (baroque flute, recorder), Thomas Read (baroque violin), Philip Ambrose (harpsicord and fortepiano), and Peter Tourin (viola da gamba).
From the Baroque Ensemble came the Oriana Singers, a baroque vocal ensemble which the Metcalfes began in 1981. They also founded the Gilbert and Sullivan Singers of Vermont. Liz was a founding member of the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble and performed for 30 years with the New York Chamber Soloists.
In 2015, the Metcalfes were awarded Walter Cerf Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts by the Vermont Arts Council.
Liz performed with many of Vermont’s finest musical ensembles including the Vermont Mozart Festival and the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble. She was selected a Fellow of the Vermont Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2010 for her contributions to the arts.
