Interview: Daniel Sperling

Today, more than one billion vehicles travel the world. By 2020, that number is expected to double. Can the planet sustain two billion cars? Not with the polluting gas-guzzlers of today, says Daniel Sperling, who spoke at ¶¶Òõ̽̽ on Jan. 15 about how we might get off the highway of catastrophe. "I'm very optimistic," Daniel Sperling says of technological solutions in development to curb the environmental impact of transportation. "It's a matter of accelerating innovation that is already starting to happen. The vehicle part is the easiest, the fuels are more difficult and the most difficult of all is changing behavior and land use." (Photo courtesy of the University of California, Davis)

Spring Starters: A Sampling of New Faculty

This academic year has brought dozens of new tenure-track faculty to campus, and a new wave begins this week at the start of the spring semester. They count among their ranks an MIT researcher interested in hydrology and mosquito-borne disease, who once rode his motorcycle from Denver to Cape Horn, and an expert on Algebraic combinatorics, who can juggle nine balls at one time. Arne Bomblies, a new faculty member in engineering, installs time-domain reflectometry probes in Banizoumbou, Niger as part of his research on hydrology, mosquito breeding and malaria in a Sahel village environment.

Voice for the Rainforest

"People have been saying, 'Save the rainforest, man,' for years," John-O Niles '91 says, doing his best to lend the right hippie dude inflection to the well-worn phrase. As director of the non-profit Tropical Forest Group, Niles' work focuses funding and action behind the bumper-sticker sentiment.
