In partnership with the Vermont Research Open Source Program Office (VERSO), the Graduate College and the Office of the Provost, the ̽̽ Libraries are hosting a three-day data and open science summit in January 2025. This free event open to the ̽̽ community will include instructional support from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Software Carpentries volunteer organization and professionals from across campus.
Statistical Design and Data Specialist at ̽̽ Libraries Maria Sckolnick has played an important role in organizing the much-anticipated event. “I’m really looking forward to connecting with other data scientists and analysts on the broader data analysis topics,” she said. “This event will be a great opportunity to network and meet like-minded professionals in the field.”
On the first day of the summit, January 7, attendees will learn from professionals at NASA and the Software Carpentries about open science—a set of principles that aim to modify access to research, promote equitable resource sharing and improve rigor and reproducibility. VERSO Program Director Kendall Fortney said, “By bringing NASA here we hope to support ̽̽ open science practices that accelerate discoveries and amplify research through transparent sharing of data and research software.”
The second day’s schedule is packed with a slew of speakers from the University Libraries, the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, the Larner College of Medicine, the College of Arts and Sciences and more. Registrants will attend workshops and presentations covering topics like data visualization, qualitative methods, metagenomics, data analysis and more.
The summit’s last day is dedicated to the participants. On January 9, attendees will convene for an “unconference,” a half-day session that is flexible, participant-driven with an agenda shaped by the group. This is a do-not-miss event for attendees especially interested in networking with professionals in the field.
