Dr. Tyler Sonnichsen is a cultural geographer, historian, and musicologist whose research focuses on dynamics of intersections of place, culture, media, and memory. His recent publications have focused on underground music, historic preservation, memorialization of conflict, the Flint Water Crisis, “dead” formats (both listening and viewing), Madrid, and Washington, DC. He published his first book, Capitals of Punk: Paris, DC, and Circulation in the Urban Underground via Palgrave in 2019, presenting invitational talks in over five countries.
Before ̽̽, Dr. Sonnichsen taught at Central Michigan University (2019 – 2024), where he taught for the Department of Geography & Environmental Studies as well as the Honors Program. In Mt. Pleasant, he served on the board of trustees for the historic Broadway Theater, where he co-produced interdisciplinary events for the Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Science & Engineering, including a Critical Engagements Film Series.
His teaching experience has included a variety of introductory and upper-division courses on American Popular Culture, Environmental Justice, Geographic Research Methods, Gender, Urban Geography, Population Geography, Race & Ethnicity, and regional geographies of North America and Europe.
